How to find the key of a song

Upload any audio file and the analyzer identifies its musical key — the tonal center your song is built around — along with the matching Camelot code for DJs. The detection uses the same chromagram technique found in professional DJ software: it measures how much energy each of the twelve pitch classes carries throughout your track and matches that fingerprint against every major and minor key.

Key detection for producers, DJs, and singers

Producers use the key to layer in melodies, chords, and samples that actually fit the track. DJs rely on Camelot codes for harmonic mixing — songs one step apart on the wheel blend smoothly. Singers check the key to know if a song sits comfortably in their vocal range before committing to a cover or a feature. Whatever you're making, knowing the key turns guesswork into a plan.

From key detection to a finished music video

Analyzing your track is usually step one of a bigger release plan. When the song is ready, One More Shot AI can turn it into a professional music video automatically — the AI reads your song's energy, tempo, and mood, then generates beat-synced visuals in the style you choose. Your first video is free, no editing skills required.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about creating AI music videos.

How does the song key finder work?

The tool builds a chromagram of your track — a profile of how much energy each of the 12 pitch classes carries — and compares it against the Krumhansl-Schmuckler key profiles for all 24 major and minor keys. The best match is your key. Everything runs locally in your browser; your file is never uploaded.

What is a Camelot code?

The Camelot wheel is a DJ-friendly notation for musical keys, from 1A to 12B. Keys that are adjacent on the wheel (like 8A and 9A, or 8A and 8B) mix harmonically, so DJs use Camelot codes to plan smooth transitions between songs.

How accurate is the key detection?

For most tonal music the detected key is reliable, and we analyze the middle section of the song where the tonality is most stable. Tracks with heavy modulation, atonal sections, or very sparse harmony can be ambiguous — relative major/minor confusion (e.g. C major vs A minor) is the most common edge case since they share the same notes.

Why do I need to know the key of a song?

Producers need the key to add melodies, chords, or samples that fit. Singers use it to check whether a song sits in their range or needs transposing. DJs use keys for harmonic mixing. And if you’re remixing or sampling, matching keys is what separates a musical blend from a clash.

Is this key finder free?

Completely free — no signup, no limits, no watermarks. The analysis happens in your browser, so nothing is ever uploaded to our servers.
